Dance and the Child International (daCi) Canada
June 8 – 10, 2017 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
for the daCi Canada Gathering
‘We Dance Because …’
Call for Proposals
In June 2017, daCi Canada, with support from Dance Saskatchewan Inc. will host a three-day gathering that will bring together children, youth and adults to celebrate dance. The focus of the gathering is to examine how young people experience dance and what the role of dance educators, researchers, administrators, public officials, teacher training institutions, and young people themselves play in the development of a healthy and vibrant dance education.
Theme of the Gathering
Many arts education curricula have been developed over the past few decades and yet despite these initiatives, there continues to be a lack of commitment to arts education, particularly in dance. As dance educators recognize the benefits of dance education in the social, emotional, physical and academic development of the young person; various obstacles such as curriculum misconceptions and lack of support, professional development and resources for teachers make it impossible to provide a meaningful dance experience that carries out curriculum aims and objectives.
We invite your participation in response to the question: What constitutes a healthy and vibrant dance education? This can include a paper submission, serving as a panel member, or your contribution to performances, workshops or lecture demonstrations.
The following topics may assist in shaping the presentations and discussions:
1. What is the focus of the dance curriculum in your province or state?
2. How are young people experiencing dance in schools?
3. What dance forms and genres are being taught in schools?
4. Who is teaching dance in schools?
5. How might we advance the training of dance educators?
6. How are we dealing with diversity in the dance classroom?
7. How might dance connect with other disciplines and learning contexts?
8. In what ways are we advocating for dance?
We look forward to your proposals that reflect the theme and topics of the daCi Gathering.
