CODE is thrilled to announce that registration is now open for the STAGES Student Drama Conference! The STAGES Student Drama Conference will provide secondary school students and teachers with the opportunity to work with Ontario artists over a two day conference at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus (UTSC). The conference will run from May 12 to May 13, 2017, and over these two days, artists will work with students and teachers in exploring the importance of drama as a tool to identify, deconstruct and understand global issues and communities.
While students, both novice and experienced in drama, will gain valuable development of their performance skills, the conference will also challenge students to explore how drama can be a catalyst in our understanding of social issues, past and present, and how the arts allow us to explore with depth the cultural, personal and emotional ramifications of these issues.
The CODE Student Drama Conference will introduce students and educators to a diverse group of artists. Over two days, conference delegates will work with artists in a series of 90 minute and 180 minute workshops that will challenge students artistically, and will allow them to explore and discuss their understanding and interpretation of a number of relevant local and global social issues. The artists from which the students will be learning will not only be involved for their artistic and creative expertise, but also for their understanding of issues being discussed. Over the past 47 years, CODE has built on the idea that exposing and connecting educators to the artists of our province will provide a unique form of professional development, and give educators a potential resource to bring in to their classroom. Similarly, the STAGES Student Drama Conference will open up students' minds as to the power of the arts and their voices, and will leave educators with potential activities and guest-artists to bring back to the classroom.
Educators can visit rsvpbook.com/stages2017 to learn more about the conference and register their students.
