Financial Literacy and Inequities in the Distribution of Wealth
Through role play, students will experience the patterns of the distribution of wealth and privilege and examine the inequities and injustices that this economic structure produces. While in role, students will explore the challenges that cultural/political leaders face in trying to distribute wealth, as well as what they as citizens can do to work toward creating a more just economic system.

Financial Literacy and Money Messages in Popular Music
In the following three lessons, students will engage in strategies such as personal storytelling, tableau, role play and improvisation to reflect upon their own relationship to money, investigate the messages about money passed on through popular music and consider whether or not they are equipped to make responsible, ethical decisions when spending money. In this exploration, students will consider the implications of needs and wants and financial responsibility from both personal and greater community perspectives.

Financial Literacy and Personal Responsibility in Times of Financial Crisis
In these two lessons, students will investigate their relationship to finance - its importance in their lives, and their role when a financial crisis occurs. Students will explore a financial set back or crisis from multiple perspectives to deepen their understanding of the issues, develop empathy, examine cause and effect as it refers to money and build problem-solving skills.

Financial Literacy and the Environment
Students will investigate the relationship between natural resources in the Canadian provinces and the economy. In these lessons, they will consider the overuse of natural resources and discover the impacts humans can have on the natural environment. Students will also learn what happens to the economy of an area that relies on a natural resource, once that resource has been depleted. They will discover the importance of protecting the natural environment and learn about initiatives to protect the environment in various Canadian communities.

Financial Literacy and Trade: Origins and Impact
In this series of lessons, students will be divided into independent nations with differing geographical landscapes. Through role play, they will work together to help one nation’s citizens cope after an experience with drought, and will later play out scenarios in which a powerful nation seeks to exploit the resources of another. The impact of foreign contact on an occupied nation will also be explored through various dramatic conventions.

Financing Dance
In this unit, students will examine important elements of careers in the dance industry. By inviting a guest to speak to the class about Arts Administration, the exploration will begin by looking at non-traditional dance jobs. From there, an examination of what dance grants are available and how an artist applies for one is embarked upon. Finally, after developing an assessment rubric with the teacher to evaluate student grant applications, the class takes on the role of a jury and peer assess the grant applications.

If I Had $100...
Students will learn the difference between wants and needs and the importance of setting priorities in terms of how money is spent. In groups, students will be given $100 to “spend” and will have to account for exactly how it is spent. Students will reflect on their choices and deal with unexpected life circumstances that will be thrown their way, which will affect their budgeting decisions.

Needs Versus Wants
These lessons empower students to use dance to explore compassionate awareness in a Needs versus Wants unit. They may be used in isolation, used together, or adapted to insert during a pre-existing Needs versus Wants unit. The order of these lessons may be altered in order to meet the needs of the teacher and the class.

What is My Tomorrow? Financial Literacy through Improvisation and Role Play
Students use techniques of self-reflection, in-role writing, improvisation, prepared improvisation, and group discussion to explore issues of wealth and poverty using the lens of Financial Literacy. Students produce a final improvisation scene exploring their own futures, based on provided scenarios depicting a variety of social and financial status factors.
