Building Bridges with Urban/Bollywood Dance Fusion - Alan Faigal

With every musical beat and pulse we build bridges between cultures and artistic genres.  We build community, identity and foster respect in and through dance.  Alan’s methodologies and dynamic approach to facilitating dance will empower learners to be cultural ambassadors through the fundamentals of Bollywood Dance with a fusion of Urban Hip Hop.  Combining the theatricality of Bollywood dance and the celebratory folk dance of Punjab known as Bhangra; workshop will showcase pedagogy and choreography that fosters students out of their comfort zones, enhance their physical literacies, build their movement repertoire and ultimately expand their cultural worldview.

Holistic teaching practices will foster a “brave space” that cultivates participants to become cultural ambassadors. As cultural ambassadors; delegates will be able to identify the cultural influences of Bollywood Dance.  Alan will also address the fine line between cultural appropriation and appreciation. Alan will share stories of his journey as an Urban dancer into the world and culture of Indian Dance. Mixing humor with introspection, he will share lessons learned in identity, privilege, authenticity and the humility that comes when we challenge and thereby expand our worldview.

Combined with Alan’s unstoppable energy, we will begin to understand the historical narratives and various genres (both commercial and traditional) that has informed the theatricality of Bollywood!
