Description

Students and teacher will collaboratively build a jazz dance. Teacher may choreograph the beginning and/or end of the piece and assist with transitions. Students will perform their final pieces for each other.

Learning Goals

  • Demonstrate an understanding of musical phrasing/counts
  • Demonstrate how to revise and refine movement to enhance the presentation

Materials

Minds On (Approximately 10 minutes)

Composition

  • Provide an analysis of the chosen accompaniment (e.g. counts and phrasing) and allocates sections to each group (e.g. 8 counts of 8; verse 1, chorus; etc).
  • Students will be divided into groups and will compose to a section of the accompaniment.
  • Students share their ideas and receive feedback from other groups and the teacher during composition.
  • Students collaborate with other groups to organize the final composition, keeping in mind the safety of self and others in the performance setting during the transitions.

Action! (Approximately 50 minutes)

Rehearsal

  • Direct students through the rehearsal process focusing on appropriate skill development.
  • Instruct the students in performance skills.
  • Students will be provided with opportunities to practice and to incorporate feedback.

Consolidation (Approximately 15 minutes)

  • Videotape and allow students to view and assess their final compositions.
  • Evaluate the creative process using a rubric.
  • Evaluate jazz technique using a rubric.

Notes/Assessment/Differentiated Instruction/Resources

Students must be given time to share their ideas and receive feedback from other groups and the teacher during composition.
