Differentiation

Instruction: Activities in this unit are designed to appeal to different learning styles, with suggestions for representing ideas visually, kinesthetically, orally or in writing forms.

Suggestions for differentiating tasks include using graphic organizers and sentence starters to scaffold written tasks. When working in groups, consider allowing students to use their mother tongues, partnered work to encourage mentoring, grouping students by ability, and adapting tasks based on skill level. Finally, teachers should use modeling and concrete examples whenever possible.

Assessment and Evaluation: Use prepared roles, anchor charts, and index cards with sentence starters for students in need when engaging in whole group role play activities. For students less likely to participate in whole group role play, consider interviewing students in role individually or in pairs. The final culminating task offers two options for students who might be more inclined to written or graphic forms; consider expanding these options to suit students’ abilities (for example, filmed scenes, radio interviews, etc.)
