Critical Learning // Apprentissage essentiel
Everyday gestures can become dance pieces by manipulating the shape and pathway used.
Guiding Questions // Questions directrices
- How does your particular gesture change each time a different combination of pathway and shape are used?
Learning Goals // Buts d'apprentissage
At the end of this lesson student will be able to:
- Show that they understand how using various pathways with shapes can change the way given movements are communicated
Instructional Components
Readiness
Students require exposure to the previous dance lessons 1 and 2 in this unit in order to be successful in this lesson. Students will have practised identifying and using pathways and shapes in their previous movement explorations.
A diagnostic activity for warm up will be used to check for understanding of pathways and shapes.

Whole Class > Warm up Activity // Toute la classe > Activité de réchauffement(adapted from Pathways Health and Physical Education Grade 2, York Region Catholic District School Board) Guide the class in a movement exploration warm up by using one body part at a time (e.g.: knees, head, elbow, hip, stomach, finger, toes, nose etc.) Students are to move with that body part as you call out different shapes which they need to then create with that body part (bent, twisted, stretched, curved, angled etc.) Begin to introduce different pathways (straight, curved, jagged, circular) that they need to move in along with a chosen body part.
